FREE EMAIL COURSE · FIVE LESSONS · TEN DAYS
Explain an uncertainty estimate with confidence.
You have an uncertainty value. But could you explain what it applies to, what it means and which evidence supports it?
Measurement uncertainty: explain one result helps you turn those questions into a clear, one-page explanation—one small task at a time.
For laboratory scientists, quality leads and educators. No advanced statistics required.
One useful outcome
Finish with your own one-page explanation and a clear next step for the evidence you still need.
Small, practical steps
Five emails over ten days. Allow about five minutes for each lesson and task; gathering local records may take longer.
A result you can work with
Follow a fictional laboratory example, or apply the questions to an examination from your own laboratory.
What will your finished explanation contain?
The result. What was measured, using which specimen and procedure.
Where the estimate applies. Which results, concentrations and operating conditions it covers.
The meaning. How to explain the uncertainty interval and its limits.
The evidence and next step. What supports the estimate, what remains uncertain and what you will check.
Five lessons. A little more clarity each time.
DAY 0 · 01 / Start with the result
Describe what was measured and which results the uncertainty estimate applies to.
DAY 2 · 02 / Read the statement
Identify the result, uncertainty, coverage factor and interval before judging the number.
DAY 4 · 03 / Map the evidence
Separate supporting records from assumptions and gaps.
DAY 7 · 04 / Explain the interval
Put the estimate into plain language without making an unsupported clinical claim.
DAY 10 · 05 / Bring it together
Complete your one-page explanation and choose a practical next step.
Days are counted from confirmed enrolment; lessons do not depend on a particular weekday.
Try a question from the course
An uncertainty estimate was established for one analyser, around one concentration. Can you assume it also applies to a different analyser or a much higher result?
Think it through, then reveal the explanation
You need evidence that the estimate remains applicable. Start by stating which analyser, procedure, concentration range and conditions it covers. Then check whether the new situation is supported. This is what we mean by defining the estimate’s scope: which results it applies to, and under what conditions.
Built around practical laboratory questions
Developed by Stephen MacDonald PhD FRCPath, Consultant Clinical Scientist, for people who need to explain and question laboratory uncertainty estimates in everyday work.
This is an introduction to interpreting an estimate. A complete uncertainty evaluation or a locally approved procedure may need more detailed work.
Make one uncertainty estimate easier to explain.
